Many of us wonder what were to happen if we were involved in an auto accident. Sometimes knowing ahead of time what to expect makes a stressful situation easier to handle. This will walk you through some of the steps you and your car will go through when it requires body work.

Usually when you have been in an accident you are rattled and not thinking clearly. That’s why it’s a good idea to print the Ballas Accident Assistance Guide and keep it in your car. If you should get into an accident, you will have this informational guide at your fingertips. It helps you thorough the initial shock, what to say, not say and how to interact with others involved in the accident, including the police.

Your first decision is if you wish to call your insurance company to report the accident and damage. Some decide to fix damage done to their vehicle and pay for it out of pocket. This will depend on your coverage, deductible or previous claims.

Should you decide to call your insurance company, they may send their own inspector to assess damage done to your vehicle or they may direct you to a Collision Center to have an estimate done through the Collision Center. You have the right to select where to have work done to your vehicle. Whether your insurance company or a Collision Center writes the estimate, your car will be looked at for damage. This is a good time to point out areas of concern you may have so you can be assured all damaged has been viewed and documented.

If your vehicle is drivable, you may stop in at anytime during business hours to obtain an estimate. Ballas will take the time to thoroughly go over your vehicle. If your vehicle is not drivable, Ballas will assess the damage and call you after our evaluation is completed. Once Ballas has your approval to begin work, we order parts and schedule the repairs.

Ordering the parts to repair your vehicle can sometimes be a tricky process. Rest assured, Ballas handles all those details. It’s not often, but it sometimes happens; a part is on back order and will require a longer than usual wait time for the part to be shipped to Ballas. Our Collision Center staff will keep you up to date on the status of your parts, should there be a back order. We understand it can be frustrating to feel left in the dark.

Once all the parts are available, your car will be assigned to a body technician. This Ballas employee has been factory trained and has years of experience. The same technician will see your vehicle’s repair through from beginning to end. Your vehicle is also logged in our system with its “Promised Delivery Date”. Our Collision Center Manager and the Production Manager are tracking the progress of your vehicle, at every part of the process. This is to ensure your vehicle will be ready when we said it would. Should your vehicle require additional repairs or the estimated time will take longer than originally thought, you will be made aware. It is unusual for this to happen.
Your body technician will disassemble your vehicle and inspect for further damage. The technician will then begin the needed repairs to get you back on the road. Ballas has a state-of-the-art collision center with highly complex equipment specific to repairing body damage. For example, any vehicles with a damaged frame or uni-body is placed in a computerized, laser guided machine that brings the vehicle back into factory tolerances.

After repair, if needed, your vehicle is sent to our paint shop. From there, it is given back to your assigned body technician for re-assembly and final touches. Vehicles requiring service repairs are sent to service to be repaired by a certified service technician. Much like the body technicians, the service technicians are trained by the factory and have many years of experience. At this time your vehicle is test driven. When your repair is complete, the vehicle is vacuumed and the windows are cleaned. Now is the best part of the process- Ballas calls you to tell you your vehicle is ready to go home.

“Having an accident with one of your most valuable possessions is a very traumatic experience”, says collision center manager, Dave Garrett. “After an accident, people feel like they have lost control and they don’t know where to turn. What I love about my job and this business is helping people restore their lives and their vehicle”, he adds.

Dave is a natural in his position. He became an Eagle Scout at age 16, and the scouting mottos of Helping other People at all Times, Serving with Honesty and Integrity, and Being Prepared are lessons that he incorporates every day in the collision business. “Dave is a person of character and is a great compliment to our management team and our organization”, says Marianne Ballas.

In his youth, Dave was a photographer but found his way to working in dealerships long ago. Dave and his wife, Barb have six adult children who are pursuing college and careers. With all that spare time (ha ha) they manage their farm. Dave still enjoys photography. He and his wife also foster dogs for a local rescue.

      The first smiling face you'll see upon entering the Ballas Service Center is vivacious Mary Jo Lompis. Mary Jo is dedicated to serving her customers, and she does it with energy and enthusiasm. You may receive a call from Mary Jo reminding you of your service appointment or checking to see if your service repairs were done to your satisfaction; and she will probably answer the phone when you are calling to book a service appointment. We know you will enjoy working with her.

      Mary Jo came to Ballas in 2008 after having spent many years in children's day care and extended care programs. However, when asked what she is most proud of in life, Mary Jo responds quickly, "First of all, my son Adam, but secondly being given the opportunity to learn a new job in a totally new industry". Mary Jo loves people and loves to talk to people. Her friendly demeanor makes quick friends. Mary Jo's sister, Jackie comments, "Mary Jo, you talk to everyone and they talk to you. I think you could make a Monk talk". Now that is charisma!

      In her spare time, Mary Jo enjoys action movies and crossword puzzles, but most of all sports, especially the New York Yankees and the Chicago Bears. When asked if there is something that people don't know about her, she replies, "People know everything about me because I love to talk to people and I have no secrets. The only thing that might qualify as a secret is that I was stood up for my senior prom, but now I think it is funny", she adds. We think her date was the loser because spending any amount of time with Mary Jo is fun and energizing. We are proud to have her serving our Ballas service customer!

      Jason Jaworski recently joined the Ballas Service department. When we asked what he does in his spare time he claimed he was a very boring person. But upon inquiry, he revealed he is a Boston Red Sox fan. In fact his eye lit up and Jason became more animated when Jason spoke about the city of Boston, the Red Sox and all things Boston.       John Millenbaugh joined the Ballas organization in 1980 after graduating from Swanton High School. During his Swanton High years John excelled in wrestling. After high school, John attended the University of Toledo. Today John and his wife Diane are residents of Delta, Ohio where they raised their three children.

      John says, "What I am most proud of in my life is having a successful twenty-two year marriage to Diane and of our three children. My kids are great kids and respectful adults. Dustin and Chelsea are hard workers and they have good jobs. Whitney is a Jr. at Kent State University and she is always on the Dean's List. I am really proud of each of my kids. They are great kids".

      While at Ballas John has been awarded numerous "Mark of Excellence" awards. "My favorite part about work", John states without hesitation, "it's all about the people and helping our customers satisfy their needs". Say no more, John is a great people person.

      Sherry Cannon has been with Ballas since 2011. However, she worked at Ballas for 7 years previously. Sherry has been in the dealership business her entire adult life. Sherry does the paperwork on all warranty claims. If you get a call from Ballas to ensure you had a pleasant experience with your service repair- you were talking to Sherry.

      She is married and devoted to her nieces and nephews. They do a lot with them and for them. She smiles when she says, "but then we send them home."

      When asked what has kept her in the car business all these years she replied, "My dad worked for a dealership. That's where my first job was. It's like it gets in your blood."

      If anyone could write the book on how to live the storybook life, it would be John Welter. John grew up in West Toledo graduating from Whitmer High School in 1978. He then enrolled at Owens Community College and received an Associates Degree in Automotive. Shortly thereafter, he married his wife, Donna. During their nearly thirty year marriage they have had three children, Andrew, Aaron, and Alissa. The family belongs to Christ the King Parish in West Toledo. John, Donna and the kids spend a lot of time together. They all enjoy water sports during the summer months at their cottage on Little Long Lake near Camden, Michigan. Another family hobby is house remodeling. John and Donna are avid fans all the home remodeling shows. They then use their skills to buy, remodel, and sell or rent their handiwork. The whole family gets involved; they have fun and they make a little income. Like we would expect, John says what he is most proud of in his life are his kids. "As I watch them grow, I am always amazed and realize how much I would have missed had I not had children". John also says that what he likes best about his job are his co-workers. He says, "We can do this kind of work anywhere, but these friendships and being with these guys that I have worked with for so many years is what it is all about". At Ballas, we think being with a solid and honorable person like John is what it is really all about. "In the years I have worked with John Welter, he has always shown professional demeanor", says Marianne Ballas. "John is highly productive service technician and he has a great outlook on life", she adds. Thanks John for all the great years of excellent work and friendship!
