| Meet Ted McLaren:Fine Automobile Artist
Ever since he was a child, Ted McLaren has had a thing for cars. It all started with his first car – a 1958 Corvette – coupled with an affinity for Formula One racing. But never in his wildest dreams did he think capturing the beauty of the automobile would end up his life’s work or his greatest achievement to date.
Serendipitous honor
In June, Ted McLaren won the 2008 Bridgestone Eye of the Artist Award which is one of 20 EyesOn Design awards given by the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology. Initially, the EyesOn Design awards were conceived as an award by which a vehicle would be judged by visually-impaired individuals using only the element of touch. The awards have since grown to become the most prestigious of awards programs in the world which showcase automotive design and fine automotive art.
“Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought I would win an award like this. It’s serendipitous for me - I lost my sight for a month in the spring 2007 following a minor eye surgery that I had,” notes McLaren.
McLaren received his award on Father’s Day, June 15, 2008 at Edsel & Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores, MI. EyesOn Design is promoted by the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology, which provides support to blind and visually impaired people as well as conducting research relating to medical and general safety issues relating to eyesight. It highlights the importance of sight in appreciating and using automobiles, and draws attention the way that both sight and vehicles are powerful tools that provide people with a measure of independence.
Success Comes in Many Different Packages
A packaging design engineer by trade, Ted spent several successful years running a Minneapolis-based packaging development group. MORE...
